cicada

As we ate dinner tonight we watched the news report on the impending Cicada Brood II invasion. This group of cicadas has not emerged for 17 years. The word is that there will be billions of cicadas covering the east coast from the Carolinas to New York. This is a new phenomenon for this California girl!

Apparently, they do not hurt people and may be good for aeration of soil. However, they are a nuisance due to their loud mating calls. Not to mention the dead carcases that result after the eggs are laid. In my mind I picture stepping outside on to my deck with hundreds of crunchy bugs under my feet!

I would love to hear from people that have actually experienced a cicada invasion. Was it as bad as I am envisioning? On another note, I am sure my chickens will have a field day and full bellies!
