Money Matters: Husband vs Wife

Are you the bread winner in your household? Do you make the money decisions? IS there a HIS account? Her account? Our account?

Oh! The endless money matters that we must deal with day in and day out with our spouse——-and in my mind every penny counts!

Recently, I (Litsa) have shared that we are tightening the budget to pay off major medical bills. I have made amends to cut spending in many ways. A few weeks ago, I had scheduled a one on one coupon learning class with a lady. We were meeting at Chic-Fil-A for me to teach her how to get started and make coupons work for her. She paid me $10 for an hour of my time! Just as I was explaining to her that this COUPON SAVINGS is work that must be embraced by everyone in the household in order for the savings to work, I saw my husband pull into the parking lot! I knew immediately that he wasn’t there to see me but to pull through the drive thru for sweet tea. As he waited for his tea at the window, I called him to ask him how much his tea was costing us—–$1.98!!! I had made a point to bring my coffee to my scheduled coupon meeting so I wouldn’t be tempted to buy food or a drink so that my full $10 earnings could be used to negate a debt somewhere. However, now I had to consider that my $10 was only $8 now!

When my husband arrived home, I didn’t let the $2 divide our household but I explained my point of view once again—-tea is only $2 for the entire box at Wal-Mart or Kroger without a sale and/or coupon and that I needed him to help curve those mini spending sessions too in order to help minimize mounding medical debt and more! Sometimes it’s not the expected monthly bills that hurt our finances but those mini money matters—–they sneak out of your pocket each day, week, and….by the end of the month one doesn’t know where the money leaked out!

How’s your 2013 Budget plan? Is it on the family table? Is everyone an active member?

Do you battle money issues with your spouse? Are you on the same page?

Actually my husband and I just completed Dave Ramsey’s “Financial Peace University” class at a local church. It taught us about: writing a budget, life insur, mortgages, college savings, nerds vs free spirits…
we learned so much. We plan to be debt-free except the house in 2 yrs.
I update our Excel spreadsheet weekly and we go over it together agreeing on what we are spending and how much extra we can apply to our debt snowball.
As far as small purchases – we both are allotted cash each week to use however we want.
    Best wishes!
