A Loss Leader: Fresh Pineapple

pineappleWhile shopping for fruit, you’ll want to select fresh fruits from your local grocery store. As spring produce makes its debut, prices will begin to drop. However, the best deals may be your weekly loss leaders. Recently, I (Litsa) was able to pick up pineapple for $0.99 each. Initially, I bought two to taste test them since our grocery store is close to our home. Both of these pineapples were juiced! However, I did taste the pineapple. It was fairly sweet but not as sweet as summer pineapple. Therefore, I did not return to the store to buy additional pineapples to flash freeze for bite size eating and/or smoothies. I opted to wait out another seasonal sale.

I did return to the store for additional pineapples to juice. At only $0.99 (loss leader price), I was able to peel the pineapple and juice it for two days of fresh juices. It was a great mix with the other fruits and vegetables that I had selected. Additionally, it was affordable! *Note that when juicing a pineapple, you do not have to throw out the middle of the pineapple. Use all of the fruit’s flesh including that center cylinder of nutrients!

Loss leaders in the produce department are perfect for extending your grocery budget and adding ‘fresh produce’ stockpile to your freezer!

Don’t miss these seasonal treats!
